AQUARIUM

Our fifth course group had the amazing opportunity to visit the Gijón aquarium with Daron as our English guide! We spent the morning touring the aquarium while Daron explained to us about the different environments of all the animals and fish. We loved seeing the two Otters swimming and playing with eachother. Our favourite part was the Touch Touch exhibit where you can touch sea urchins, starfish, and sea anenomes! We saw many exiting fish like the two large sharks, the giant seaturtle, and some of Daron´s favorites: razorfish and jellyfish! We also were lucky to stay for a feeding session to see how the fish eat. Take a look at the photos of our fun day at the aquarium!

FAST PANCAKES

Next Tuesday is Pancake Day in England and to celebrate, Daron showed the fifth course how to make pancakes! We used a typical American pancake recipe that includes flour, milk, eggs, sugar, and salt to make the batter. Instead of using the typical skillet method, we tried making the pancakes on a griddle. See the recipe below for this tasty treat so that you can make them at home.
In honour of the day, we also held a pancake relay outside in which students had to run and flip "pancakes" in a skillet as quickly as possible. It was so much fun!
  • 1 cup flour
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter or oil
  • 1 egg

PEANUT BUTTER DAY

Once again, it is one of Daron´s favourite holidays--National Peanut Butter Day in the United States. Peanut butter is a very important staple in the American diet and has also started to become popular all over the world! Daron gives the fifth course a presentation on peanut butter to describe the background and uses for this wonderful treat. Afterwards, each student was able to try the peanut butter! It seemed like they really liked it!

Thanksgiving Turkey!!

Today we celebrated Daron´s favourite holiday--Thanksgiving Day! The fourth thursday of November is a very important day in the United States and Canada. It is a day when families gather to eat traditional food together to celebrate autumn and the history of America.
Typical foods of Thanksgiving day include turkey, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, and stuffing. Daron explained the tradition to 5th course and showed some photos of past Thanksgivings. Afterwards, each student decorated a paper feather and wrote one thing they are thankful for. Each of these feathers were put together to create one Thanksgiving turkey!
Have a look at the pictures below! It was very fun!

HALLOWEEN 2013

These are the activities we enjoyed this Halloween 2013

And this is how an American had enjoyed it

Daron created a Halloween powerpoint to show 5th and 6th course. She brought lots of photos to show previous Halloween costumes and festivities. Coming from America, Daron has been celebrating Halloween every year since she was a child. It is very important in her country so it was fun to see some of her old costumes!
